Match Report, Wanderers & Cwm Draig

Earlier this month, City of Newport water polo took part in two derby matches. First up for Newport was a trip to Cardiff Bay to play a Bristol & West First Division match against table-topping rivals Welsh Wanderers. Newport knew that this would be one of the toughest games that the team had played in many years. Welsh Wanderers, the only Welsh team currently playing in the British National League, having finished this season ranked fifteenth in the country, Wanderers is in essence a regional side. Drawing on the best club players in Wales, the club primarily exists to provide the principality’s leading players with a standard of competition that their local clubs cannot provide. Hence for Newport captain James Farror, who has also lead Welsh Wanderers on several occasions this year, and 18 year old Hugh Spencer, who regularly starts for the opposition, this was a somewhat bittersweet experience.

The match proved to be as difficult as Newport expected. With Wanderers fielding a side containing six senior Wales internationals and one former Great Britain star, and having won all of their previous five league games this season, progress proved difficult to come by for the visitors. Although Newport did well to finish the first quarter only 2-1 down, an extremely heavy press defence on Wanderers’ part combined with poor decision-making in attack resulted in the home side running away with the game. In the end, it was Wanderers who ran out comfortable 12-1 winners, with Farror scoring Newport’s solitary goal.

But despite the one-sided score line, Newport were not too disheartened by the defeat. With their most experienced and most creative player Chris Taylor unavailable for the match, Newport struggled to create many meaningful scoring opportunities and were continually caught on the counterattack. Nevertheless, Newport did manage to contain Wanderers to their smallest goal tally so far this season and, in reality, this figure could have been even lower had Newport’s decision-making in attack been better.

Newport’s second match was the quarterfinal of the President’s Cup. This competition runs very much like a normal cup competition, with the possibility of teams from different divisions being drawn against each other, but with the added twist that a handicap is decided by the committee for each match based the relative positions between the two teams within the league structure. The idea is to ensure that the matches remain competitive, with the lower ranking team usually starting with a head start.

Newport faced an uphill battle. Drawn at home against Aberdare based outfit Cwm Draig, who finished one from bottom in the league last year, the home side immediately found itself playing catch-up, with the visitors awarded a 15 goal head start. To begin with, however, it looked as if Newport were up to the task. Less than three minutes into the game, the home side raced into a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, Newport couldn’t keep up their momentum and despite being comfortable all game ultimately just fell short the target, winning the match 24-11 but losing the fixture 24-26 as a result of the handicap. Goal scorers on the day were Farror (9), Taylor (8), Spencer (3), Gareth Campbell (2), and juniors Jack Tod (1) and Ollie Chilcott (1).

Update 10th May 2017

The Seniors showed spirit and determination in their match against Wanderers last Thursday, and despite the 12 – 1 loosing scoreline, they can take heart that they did not give up at all throughout the match. We have received notification from Carmarthen and Newport RTC’s that they will be starting again on 7th May and continuing until 14th July, with a break for 1 week during that time. (Newport will be breaking on 7th July, not sure yet when Carmarthen will be breaking.)

These are very valuable training groups for the young players and one of the areas they will be assessed at for National Team Selection. If your child has aspiration to play for Wales, please make every effort to attend the RTC’s.

We have spoken to most parents about this, but if you need any further information please do just ask me.

Update 25th April 2017

Since the last time I produced an update, the Welsh 2000 Squad has competed in the EU Nations Cup, with 4 of our players in the team, the Welsh Regional U19 team has competed in the National Age Groups Plate competition and came Second in the U19’s, with one Newport Player in the team and the U17 team has competed in the National Age Groups Plate competition and came Third in the U17’s with 6 Newport Players in the team, coached by Isaac and Jack. The Seniors took on Frome in Frome and narrowly lost to them. All in all, a lot has happened.

Update 29th March

Please note, there is no Club training this weekend due to a Gala in Newport.

Last week saw a lot of Polo played by all ages at the Club. This started with the 1999’s taking on Swansea in Swansea, which saw them win 9 – 26, then the 2002’s took on Carmarthen at home and another win 19 – 5. Next to take to the water were the Junior Bristol and West team, who arrived in Exeter with only 8 members of the team. This match resulted in our closest contest with Exeter, a narrow defeat 13 – 11. The Seniors took to the water after this and again narrowly lost to Exeter 16 – 13.

All of these games saw some excellent individual and team performances, well done to you all for the effort and determination you all showed, keep it up.

RTC in Newport only Friday.

There is a Gala at the pool this weekend, (1st April, no joke), so there will be no Club training over the weekend.

The Welsh Junior Men Swim Set takes place this Saturday in Swansea between 14.00 and 16.30, then there is the Welsh Water Polo Clinic on Sunday from 11.00 – 14.00. Don’t forget the academy session from 11.00 – 12.00.

We are waiting for confirmation, but we hope the next 2nd Team (Seniors) game will be against Hereford at 15.00 on Saturday 8th April (at home)

The 2nd Team fixture list is taking shape very quickly. We already have matches planned against Bradford, Hereford and Weston-Super-Mare, all on a home and away basis. As soon as I have a couple of the dates confirmed, I will send out an updated calendar.

Swansea V Newport seconds Match Report

A winning start for Newport Water Polo

City of Newport’s season got under way last week when its newly established second team travelled west to play Swansea in a friendly. Having been created to give some of the less established senior squad players more game time, Newport II’s line-up on the day was comprised of a combination of up-and-coming youngsters and experienced veterans, with the players ranging from 15 to 54 years of age.

Despite missing several leading first team players – including the club’s four senior internationals – Newport II’s made relatively easy work of the inexperienced opposition, who themselves have only been in existence for a few years. Captained by centre-back Lewis Jones, and employing a high tempo counterattacking game, Newport II’s raced into a 7-2 lead at half-time, with Gareth Campbell scoring four, Jack Tod contributing two and Isaac Bowen also getting on the scoresheet.

The second half was a much more even affair. Nevertheless, with Newport II’s press defence holding firm and the counterattack continuing to paid dividends, it was the visitors who ultimately came out on top. Both Bowen (2) and Daniel Griffiths managed to get on the scoresheet, but it was 15 year old Ollie Chilcott who stole the show, scoring a brace late on. One of Chilcott’s goals - a particularly sweet long range effort that flew into the top right corner of the net – was arguably the highlight of the match.

Whilst Newport II’s 12-5 victory was fairly comfortable in the end, it was an important win nonetheless. On 8 March, the club kicks off its fifth season in the Bristol & West League since re-entering the competition in 2013, when Frome visit Newport International Sports Village. Having been crowned champions of the Second Division last year, it promises to be a testing season for newly-promoted Newport. Therefore, the victory against Swansea was a great opportunity for the players to get some much needed water time and momentum ahead of a big year.

It is also hoped that the match will be the first of many for Newport II’s. A number of friendly matches are being arranged over the next year, with the ultimate aim of entering a Newport II’s team into competitive tournaments and leagues from 2018. To this end, the club is looking to recruit new players. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve played before – the club caters for players of all ages and abilities, from complete novices through to current internationals. All that you will need is a reasonable swimming ability and a willingness to learn in a friendly, social and supportive environment.
