Weekly Update 28th July 2017

Well done to both the Juniors and Seniors for their performances last weekend. Newton Abbott, in the Teignmouth Lido, is never an easy fixture, and our Juniors went there with a seriously under strength side. All played well and stuck at the game to the final whistle. The Seniors played well, considering their lack of shallow end experience, and came away with a vital win. Well done to both teams.

Weekly Update 7th June 2017

What a game the Seniors played against Cheltenham last Wednesday. To come away from the game as 14 – 6 win was excellent, but the way the seniors played was great to watch. Well done to you all.

We all felt for the Juniors after a confused and hesitant preparation for their game against Bristol, determination was shown to come back and not allow their heads to drop after the first chukka. Having been down 9 – 0 at the end of the first Chukka, it showed great spirit to finish the match with only a 17 – 7 loss.

Tonight the Seniors take on Bristol in the Bristol and West league, good luck guys, work hard. I am sure that after the last display, Bristol are likely to turn up with their best possible side.

Newport Claim a Major Victory

City of Newport water polo played its fifth Bristol & West League match of the season on Wednesday, when Cheltenham were the visitors to Newport International Sports Village. The Newport went into the match as huge underdogs. Indeed, Cheltenham have created a fierce reputation for themselves in recent times. The Cheltenham currently have two teams competing in the British National League. Their first team were crowned British champions in March for the fourth year in a row, whilst their second team also compete in the fourth tier of the National League. But even though it was Cheltenham’s seconds who turned up on Wednesday evening, Newport still knew that the visitors were very much favourites going into the game.

But the match did not start as expected. During the opening minutes, it was the Newport that took control, racing into a 3-1 lead through goals from captain and centre-forward James Farror; experienced arc player Gareth Campbell, who, along with Daniel Griffiths, was making his 50th competitive appearance for Newport; and the ever-threatening international veteran Chris Taylor. But Cheltenham refused to lie down and came back into the game. At the end of the first quarter, it was the Cheltenham who held a slim 4-3 lead.

The second quarter was a much more one-sided affair. Switching between a heavy press and a zonal defence, and also hitting a tired Cheltenham side on the counterattack, Newport played their finest quarter of water polo in many years. Keeping a clean sheet, but also adding further goals through Taylor (2), Farror (1), 18 year old Hugh Spencer (2) and 17 year old Jack Tod (1), Newport raced into a surprising 9-4 lead at half-time.

The start of the third quarter saw Newport extend its lead, following another brace from Taylor. But just when it seemed that Newport had acquired an unassailable lead, a plot twist provided Cheltenham with a potential route back into the match. With two minutes left to play in the quarter, one of the Newport International Players was red-carded for kicking a Cheltenham player. As a result, Cheltenham were awarded a penalty, which they converted, but more importantly Newport was forced to play a man-down for four minutes. If Cheltenham could take advantage of the situation, it would lead to a tense final few minutes.

But Cheltenham could not make the most of the opportunity. In fact, during the exclusion period, it was Newport who continued to dominate. With Newport employing a very low drop in defence, forcing long shots against the Newport’s excellent goalkeeper, Alex James, Cheltenham failed to get on the scoresheet. Newport, by contrast, registered two further goals, with Taylor scoring a back-shot from the wing and Campbell from a five-metre foul shot. Consequently, when the teams went back to evens after four minutes, Newport had all but won the match. Yet there was still time left for Newport to register one final goal – and it came in extraordinary circumstances. As the final whistle sounded, the Cheltenham keeper inexplicably decided to leave his goal, only for Farror to shoot and score a length of the pool shot, giving much delight to the spectators and Newport a comfortable 14-6 victory.

This was a momentous win for the division’s new boys, who displayed superb game-management throughout the match. Despite having won Division Two last year, Newport knew that they would face some extremely tough opponents this season and that avoiding relegation would be a tough ask. But their win over Cheltenham – the team’s second of the league campaign and first ever over national league opposition – has put them in a fantastic position to do precisely that. There are more tough games ahead in June, with four further matches against national league opposition, but Newport know that they will be a match for any team if they can play to their potential.

Newport Water Polo is expanding and seeking new players to join this thriving Club. Please contact Newport Water Polo at    admin@newportwaterpolo.co.uk    for information on how to join us for this exciting and growing sport.

Update 31st May 2017

The 2nds travelled to Weston Super Mare last Thursday to play Weston in a friendly. Weston paid us a massive compliment by fielding their best possible side to play the match. Despite the youth (with an average age below 18) and comparative inexperience of our team, the 2nds were able to hold Weston to a 9 – 5 defeat. Great work for the start of the 2nds working together !

The 99’s played Cwm Draig in the Welsh League last Saturday and narrowly lost 10 – 11, a great effort from the team, with only 2 benchers to rotate in to help.

Tonight the Seniors take on Cheltenham in the Bristol and West league, good luck guys, work hard.

RTC is on in Newport only this Friday. Carmarthen RTC has their mid-term break this Friday.

Update 24th May 2017

I would like to start by congratulating all who played for the Club over last weekend, you all did really well and showed what you are made of, well done from us all.

The Seniors played magnificently on Saturday against Cwm Draig, and only narrowly missed pulling off a major victory. Starting with a 15 goal head start, it was always going to be a big ask of the seniors, but you stuck to it, coming within 1 point of Cwm Draig in the dying minutes. Beating Cwm Draig 24 – 11 in the water, to loose the fixture 24 – 26 due to the handicap is such a shame, but well done to you all for the effort.

Cwm Draig 2002’s pulled out of the planned fixture against us only 5 ½ hours before the game, which is a crying shame. Still, the older Juniors stepped into the breach and took on the 2002’s in a fun match. The older juniors were not allowed to use their dominant hand for the match, which lead to some fun water polo.

The 2nds then took on Bradford in a friendly. The 2nds performed very well and were able to finish winners, by 15 – 5. Great game well done to you all.

Tomorrow (Thursday 25th May) sees the 2nds take on Weston, good luck to you all.

There is training as normal for the Seniors tonight (Wednesday) swim set starts at 20.00 and Polo training starts at 21.00.

RTC is on in both Newport and Carmarthen this Friday.

Training for the Juniors this weekend is as normal, starting at 4PM on Saturday. please note, Juniors is only for 1 hour this week due to a 1999’s match at 17.00.

The 1999’s take on Cwm Draig in the Welsh League at 17.00 on Saturday, please meet in reception at 16.30. Details to follow.

Seniors training is immediately after the end of the 1999’s match and goes on until 19.30.

The 2002’s were due to take on Carmarthen on Sunday (28th May), this has been postponed, new date to follow.

Below is the diary, I hope it all makes it clear to understand:

Match Report, Wanderers & Cwm Draig

Earlier this month, City of Newport water polo took part in two derby matches. First up for Newport was a trip to Cardiff Bay to play a Bristol & West First Division match against table-topping rivals Welsh Wanderers. Newport knew that this would be one of the toughest games that the team had played in many years. Welsh Wanderers, the only Welsh team currently playing in the British National League, having finished this season ranked fifteenth in the country, Wanderers is in essence a regional side. Drawing on the best club players in Wales, the club primarily exists to provide the principality’s leading players with a standard of competition that their local clubs cannot provide. Hence for Newport captain James Farror, who has also lead Welsh Wanderers on several occasions this year, and 18 year old Hugh Spencer, who regularly starts for the opposition, this was a somewhat bittersweet experience.

The match proved to be as difficult as Newport expected. With Wanderers fielding a side containing six senior Wales internationals and one former Great Britain star, and having won all of their previous five league games this season, progress proved difficult to come by for the visitors. Although Newport did well to finish the first quarter only 2-1 down, an extremely heavy press defence on Wanderers’ part combined with poor decision-making in attack resulted in the home side running away with the game. In the end, it was Wanderers who ran out comfortable 12-1 winners, with Farror scoring Newport’s solitary goal.

But despite the one-sided score line, Newport were not too disheartened by the defeat. With their most experienced and most creative player Chris Taylor unavailable for the match, Newport struggled to create many meaningful scoring opportunities and were continually caught on the counterattack. Nevertheless, Newport did manage to contain Wanderers to their smallest goal tally so far this season and, in reality, this figure could have been even lower had Newport’s decision-making in attack been better.

Newport’s second match was the quarterfinal of the President’s Cup. This competition runs very much like a normal cup competition, with the possibility of teams from different divisions being drawn against each other, but with the added twist that a handicap is decided by the committee for each match based the relative positions between the two teams within the league structure. The idea is to ensure that the matches remain competitive, with the lower ranking team usually starting with a head start.

Newport faced an uphill battle. Drawn at home against Aberdare based outfit Cwm Draig, who finished one from bottom in the league last year, the home side immediately found itself playing catch-up, with the visitors awarded a 15 goal head start. To begin with, however, it looked as if Newport were up to the task. Less than three minutes into the game, the home side raced into a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, Newport couldn’t keep up their momentum and despite being comfortable all game ultimately just fell short the target, winning the match 24-11 but losing the fixture 24-26 as a result of the handicap. Goal scorers on the day were Farror (9), Taylor (8), Spencer (3), Gareth Campbell (2), and juniors Jack Tod (1) and Ollie Chilcott (1).

Update 10th May 2017

The Seniors showed spirit and determination in their match against Wanderers last Thursday, and despite the 12 – 1 loosing scoreline, they can take heart that they did not give up at all throughout the match. RTC's

We have received notification from Carmarthen and Newport RTC’s that they will be starting again on 7th May and continuing until 14th July, with a break for 1 week during that time. (Newport will be breaking on 7th July, not sure yet when Carmarthen will be breaking.)

Newport starts at 20.00 with a 30 minute land fitness session until 20.30, then into the pool until 22.00. Carmarthen starts at 20.30 and is all pool work until 22.00. The cost for RTC is £60 in total for the 10 week training, to be paid at the RTC by cash or cheques made payable to Swim Wales.

These are very valuable training groups for the young players and one of the areas they will be assessed at for National Team Selection. If your child has aspiration to play for Wales, please make every effort to attend the RTC’s.

We have spoken to most parents about this, but if you need any further information please do just ask me.

Kind regards

Harriet

Update 25th April 2017

Since the last time I produced an update, the Welsh 2000 Squad has competed in the EU Nations Cup, with 4 of our players in the team, the Welsh Regional U19 team has competed in the National Age Groups Plate competition and came Second in the U19’s, with one Newport Player in the team and the U17 team has competed in the National Age Groups Plate competition and came Third in the U17’s with 6 Newport Players in the team, coached by Isaac and Jack. The Seniors took on Frome in Frome and narrowly lost to them. All in all, a lot has happened.

That, however, is nothing compared to the next 2 months, which should see teams from Newport in action no less than 17 times between now and the 1st July (2 months)

Training is as normal for the Seniors tomorrow night (Wednesday 26th April)

There is no training this Saturday (29th April) due to a Gala at the pool.

Update 12th April

Firstly, good luck to Dan, Luke, Ollie and Toby who all travel today to represent Wales at the EU Nations Cup in the Czech Republic this weekend, play hard and have great games, this is what memories are made of, enjoy it guys and feel proud of yourselves.

Training as normal this Saturday, please make a big effort to be there, the teams need to get some practice in after the recent matches.

A big well done to the 1999 team who took on Wanderers last Saturday. That was a great win, 18 – 10, a fantastic result for Newport.

Then to follow that, the BWWPL Junior team produced a fantastic result on Sunday, beating Devonport 16 – 11, well done again. That result takes you to 3rd in the league table.

!!!!!!!   Please note, if anyone has not sorted out their WASA membership payment with the Club, please do it as quickly as possible. You will not be allowed to play in any competitive matches if your Swim Wales membership is not up to date. Worse than that, should the Club not realise, and you play, it could result in disqualification of the whole team. Please sort it as soon as possible !!!!!!!
